A mixed bag from Santa! The first game of the morning featured the Piranha’s. It was evident from the first couple of minutes that the organisation of the team and tactical awareness was for superior to the Denton team. An early shot from eventual Man of the Match, Teddy Fantom hit the upright after a super move involving the entire outfield team. The Piranha’s were to keep the pressure on having a plethora of set plays. With the absence of the regular free kick taker, Oliver Stonehouse stepped up to the mantle and had to watch a couple of great strikes narrowly miss the target. Alex Friend and Joe Aspden also had good chances. With Glossop declining so many opportunities to take the lead, the Denton team sensed a shock win and hit the Piranha’s on the break during the second half. However, they were up against Will Winbow who managed to maintain concentration levels and saved comfortably. The game ended as it started with Piranha’s frustrated, another day they would have scored a hatful.
GNE Shark’s 1 Denton ‘A’ 0 The game was much more even than the Shark’s would have liked, with the Denton team squaring up to the midfield and matching them tackle for tackle. The GNE rock in defence had to stand tall to thwart the Denton attackers, and when he wasn’t doing that, he managed to sneak up into attack to support his teammates. Toby Newton , Max Fitzgerald and Will Valentine made a super triangle in midfield and worked hard for one another. At half time, Jonny Gabriel came on for the ever improving Eathan Tomlinson in defence and made a good energetic impact. Josh Ward in goals, managed to keep the Shark’s in the game with some intelligent interceptions and saves. The move of the game, involved excellent play from Kieran Coggin and Toby Newton, with Toby eventually scoring and gaining his reward for a tenacious display. The man of the match was Will Valentine.
28.02.2010 Piranha’s 0 Fletcher Moss 1 Shark’s 0 Fletcher Moss 2 01.12.09 First to play were the Piranha’s. GNE Sharks 2 Delamere ‘A’ 0 From the first whistle to the last, the Midfield were ruthless, picking up all loose and second balls and sticking in challenges that would make John Terry wince! Max Fitzgerald scored the first after excellent work from Jonny Gabriel. The Shark’s didn’t have things all their own way however and it became clear that a second goal would be required after excellent work from Goalkeeper Josh Ward kept them in the game. Perhaps most evident in the Shark’s performance was the progress and composure of Eathan Tomlinson in defence. He cleared time and time again, not by hoisting the ball up the pitch but by taking a touch and making a telling pass – super play, and deserving of his man of the match award. First to play were the Piranha’s. If Marple thought they were in for an easy challenge they soon got a reality check! Teddy Fantom in midfield was outstanding and his well timed challenges made the midfield strong and helped to create plenty of challenges. After several near misses Alex Friend continued to add to his excellent goal tally with an excellent finish. Another goal was soon to come from Oliver Parker. The Piranha’s would give any team a real headache and the new attacking formation was paying dividends with assured Performances from Will Winbow (Goalkeeper) and Ben Gove in midfield also. Oliver Stonehouse continued his improvement with some excellent tackles and super clearances; he deserved his man of the match accolade.
Although Marple were gifted a goal by a somewhat passive referee GNE stepped up another gear and Alex Friend grabbed his second goal with a calm finish from close range. GNE Sharks 2 Marple A 3 GNE Sharks were going to be in for a real test in defence and midfield and Josh Ward in goals made some excellent saves. The first half was very tight and Max Fitzgerald was all over the Marple midfield and deserved his man of the match award. Equally hard working was Kieran Coggin in defence, who performed with confidence, strength and skill throughout the game. Toby Newton continues to catch the eye. Marple were unable to deal with his powerful corner to the near post, The Shark’s took the lead, courtesy of a Marple own goal. There were clearly more goals in this, and Marple turned the screw with two outstanding strikes to take them into the lead. Substitute Oliver Brotherton continues to show excellent improvement and the Shark’s managed to get a late consolation goal with an excellent long distance strike from Toby Newton Getting into Winning Ways! The Piranha’s maintained their recent good form and managed to outplay the Curzon Ashton team for the majority the of the game. Curzon Ashton were not without attacking prowess though, and from the opening minutes goalkeeper, Will Winbow, showed why he is one of the best in his age group and league. However it was Oliver Parker who really took the game to the Curzon side. His long range free kicks and shots caused plenty of problems; he was to be rewarded with a goal mid way through the first half. Curzon didn’t lie down however and responded with a long range free kick of their own just before half time. Joe Aspen came on as sub for the Piranha’s and continued to show excellent improvement, finding good positions for himself and teammates. After knocking at the door for much of the half, the Glossop boys were finally rewarded. Ben Gove (defence), may have given the coach a mild bout of angina, by making a run into the centre forwards position, but his opportunism earned him a goal, a man of the match award, and most importantly, the Piranha’s a 2-1 victory! Sharks 1 Curzon Ashton A 0 11 October Sharks 2 Delamere A 0 The Shark’s looked like a very tight and well organised team. There were excellent moves from back to front, and a real awareness when in possession, of their teammates. There were excellent contributions from all. Toby Newton is rapidly proving himself to be a hard working and skilful midfielder, always comfortable on the ball. The cutting edge in this game came from the dynamic duo of Will Valentine and Max FItzgerald, who both got on the score sheet, and could have added more to their tally, if luck had been on their side. Kieran McColl, (man of the match) was again outstanding in this game, fulfilling his defensive responsibilities but also joining up in attack when required. 11 October Piranha’s 2 Delamere B 2 Joint coach/managers, MikeFitzgerald and Brian Valentine were delighted with the performances of both teams. On Sunday the GNE under 7’s faced a stiff test from Reddish Villa ‘B’ . First up were the Glossop North End Piranha’s. The honours were fairly even for some time, with both sides ‘jousting’ for midfield supremacy. Reddish struck mid way into the half, and quickly followed the first with another excellent strike. There were some notable performances during the first half including important contributions from the midfield man of the match Teddy Fantom (man of the match), who was never far from the action and made some excellent solo runs through the heart of the Reddish defence. In the second half, Glossop put together some of the best passing moves of the game, at the heart of them was midfield magician, Kieran McColl and this was a spell when the ‘Piranha’s’ were unfortunate not to get back into the match. The GNE Sharks faced the Reddish Villa ‘A’ team. In a very tight game, the ‘Sharks’ worked tirelessly to gain the upper hand. Will Valentine and Toby Newton in midfield both did their jobs selflessly and the defensive partnership of Joe Aspden and Kieran Coggin held tight under extreme pressure. Glossop had the lion’s share of possession for most of the first half, but were unable to unlock the Reddish defence. Max Fitzgerald was impressive in his striking role and asked the Reddish defence plenty of questions, unfortunately they never stopped answering back, the deadlock continued! Perhaps most encouraging was the ever growing confidence of stand in goalkeeper, Josh Ward whose save from close range kept the Sharks in the game, and rightly earned him the man of the match award. The Sharks were, all in all, unlucky not to get a better result, but will be encouraged by their performance. (Result, GNE ‘Shark’s 0 – Reddish ‘A’ 0) |
